In short
- Be truthful, respect your neighbours’ privacy, and keep it about the building.
- No harassment, hate, sexual or violent content, false alerts, fake reviews, restricted goods or spam.
- Report anything that breaks these rules from the app. Your society’s moderators review it, and Neighby steps in for anything serious.
- You can appeal a removal by writing to support@neighby.in.
1. What this policy covers
This policy applies to everything people add to Neighby: feed posts and comments, notices, complaints, polls, questions and answers, listings, lost-and-found items, carpools, events, service contacts and their reviews, messages, voice notes, photos and profiles.
It works alongside our Terms & Conditions. It also reflects the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, which apply to platforms that host what their users post.
2. Who moderates
- Your society's moderators, appointed by the committee, review reports for your society in the admin panel and can take content down.
- Neighby steps in for anything illegal or dangerous, for content in shared directories that reach beyond one society, and for complaints sent to our Grievance Officer.
- Only the committee can publish official notices. A notice must not be used for anything this policy forbids.
3. What is not allowed
- Harm to people
- Harassment, threats, bullying or intimidation, and hate against anyone for their religion, caste, community, gender, sexual orientation, disability, language or region.
- Other people’s privacy
- Sharing a resident’s phone number, flat, vehicle number, photo or CCTV footage without their consent, and naming or shaming a resident over dues or a dispute. The committee has its own tools for dues.
- False or misleading
- False complaints, SOS alerts or vehicle alerts; impersonating a committee member, staff or another resident; fake reviews of service contacts, including of your own business; and false claims that could cause panic.
- Sexual and violent content
- Nudity or sexual content, any content that sexualises children, graphic violence, and content that promotes self-harm.
- Illegal and dangerous
- Anything unlawful in India, including content promoting terrorism, weapons, illegal drugs or other crimes, and content that infringes someone’s copyright or trademark.
- Restricted listings
- Selling or promoting alcohol, tobacco, drugs, prescription medicines, weapons, gambling or betting, and pyramid or chain schemes.
- Spam and campaigning
- Repeated or bulk posting, commercial promotion outside the listings feature, and party-political campaigning. Discussing society matters — including committee elections — is welcome.
4. How to report something
- Use Report on the post, comment, answer, listing, event or review in the app. Reports go to your society’s moderators.
- If you don’t want to see someone’s posts, you can block them. They are not told.
- To report to Neighby directly, write to support@neighby.in with a description and, if you can, a screenshot.
If someone is in danger, call 112 first. Report child sexual abuse material to the police and at cybercrime.gov.in as well as to us.
5. What happens after a report
- A moderator either dismisses the report or takes the content down. When content is taken down, its author is told.
- We aim to act on reports within 24 to 48 hours.
- Content that shows a person nude or in a sexual act, or that impersonates them, is removed within 24 hours of that person — or someone on their behalf — reporting it to us.
- Repeated or serious breaches can lead to a ban from posting in your society, or suspension or closure of the account.
- Removing content or suspending an account does not entitle a society to a refund of its subscription.
6. Appeals
If you think your content was taken down, or your account restricted, by mistake, write to support@neighby.in within 30 days with what was removed and why you think it should stay. We review the decision again and reply within 15 days.
7. Law enforcement
We share information with the police or other authorities when the law or a valid order requires it, or when we believe someone is at risk of serious harm. As the IT Rules require, we keep a record of content removed for breaking the law for 180 days, so it can be used in an investigation.
8. Grievance Officer
We acknowledge every complaint within 24 hours and resolve it within 15 days.
9. Changes to this policy
The date at the top shows when this policy last changed. We will tell you in the app before a material change takes effect. See also our Privacy Policy.
